The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC)® |
The NMFC Data update lifecycle occurs two times a year, beginning with a Proposal and culminating in the publication of a Supplement. The NMFC Book is then updated and republished every January to show the full updates from the previous years' Supplements. You can use the flowchart and table of definitions below to understand the timeline of how these data updates are created and adopted.

NMFC Supplement Workflow
There are two Supplements published during a calendar year, each following a membership meeting where the contents of the updates are reviewed and voted on by the FCDC. Below is a snapshot of the Supplement workflow.

Below is a snapshot of the NMFC Book process.
NMFC Data Update Lifecycle Definitions
| Step | Definition | Timeline |
| Proposal | The NMFC Classification team researches and writes proposals for new updates. | Ongoing. |
| Docket | The docket is the final collection of completed proposals that will be reviewed, discussed, and voted on at the membership meeting. | Twice a year. |
| Vote | The Freight Classification Development Council (FCDC) meets twice a year to review, discuss, and vote on proposed data updates in the Docket. | During the two membership meetings per year. |
| Distribution Bulletin | After the FCDC votes on the Docket, the results are published in a Distribution Bulletin, which is a preview of the Supplement. | Issued approximately 10 days after the vote. |
| Supplement | The Supplement is the published data update. |
Issued approximately 30 days after the Distribution Bulletin is issued. Effective approximately 60 days after the Distribution Bulletin is issued and approximately 90 days after the Docket is issued. |
| Book Publication | The NMFC publishes an updated book once a year that includes the two cycles of changes. | The NMFC book is issued and is effective in January of each year. |
