| Standard Point Location Code® (SPLC™) |
The Standard Point Location Code® (SPLC™) is designed to facilitate the development of rates and track the movement of freight. It provides each point originating freight and each point receiving freight in North America with a unique code number in order to identify the point with its geographic location.
SPLCs are largely used by the Department of Defense, commercial shippers, and the railroad industry. They were originally set up to facilitate location information primarily for both the trucking and the railroad industries.

SPLC is copyrighted and maintained by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. The alphabetical list of points to which SPLC have been assigned is published in the Continental Directory of Standard Point Location Codes (SPLC), NMF 102 series which is filed as a tariff with the state regulatory agencies.
SPLC is available on the internet through an annual subscription to SPLC Online as well as in a fixed length field data file distributed digitally by email. The data file is sold on a calendar year subscription basis.
NMFTA and Railinc Partnership
NMFTA makes all official SPLC assignments. The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has moved all SPLC maintenance to Railinc. When railroads want a new station, they contact NMFTA and provide specific information, such as the location, the freight station accounting code number, etc., in order to help with the assignment process. Then, NMFTA validates the information to make sure the location is not already affiliated with a code and assigns an appropriate code for the new station.
