The Freight Standards Academy (FSA) is an academic program from the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)® designed for universities and high schools. The Academy gives teachers and students access to the standards, tools, and resources used in less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping today, so students can see how LTL freight actually works outside the classroom.
Since 1956, NMFTA has published and maintained the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC®), the gold standard used to classify LTL freight. Today, NMFTA’s work reaches across classification, digitalization, cybersecurity, research, and other areas critical to moving freight safely and efficiently. This means that the Academy can bring specialized expertise into higher education ensuring that future experts in LTL are fully equipped to handle tomorrow's challenges.
Schools and departments can add FSA Academy materials to the courses and training programs they already offer. Through the FSA, you can use:
- Standards developed by NMFTA
- Professional tools used in the freight industry
- Educational resources for the classroom
- Subject matter experts who can share their real-world experience

Two Learning Tracks
The Academy currently offers two robust learning paths for educators and students, with a growing portfolio of educational opportunities, including the following:
-
NMFC Education: NMFC Education and resources help higher-education Packaging programs introduce students to less-than-truckload (LTL) transportation and the National Motor Freight Classification® (NMFC)®—giving them foundational knowledge they can carry from the classroom into their careers.
See NMFC Education for more information.
-
LTL Packaging Education: Packaging Standards Education gives faculty another way to connect academic instruction with the standards, practices, and real-world considerations affecting LTL transportation. Through resources and access to NMFTA subject matter experts, departments can give students greater context around the role packaging plays across the freight lifecycle.
