| Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC®) |
To enhance fraud-resilience, safety, and trust, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA)™ uses an ID verification process within its Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC®) product for non-Class 8 carriers.
The SCAC ID verification process takes place during the SCAC Apply, Renew, and Reinstatement processes. It adds identity and address validation designed to confirm that the individual and the business are not fraudulent and is a legitimate entity. These changes close the gap in our fraud-prevention controls for those carriers who cannot be validated using Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) details, ensuring that only verified carriers receive a SCAC.

There are two identity verification methods within SCAC for carriers: Verified through FMCSA Data means that as of the date of SCAC assignment/renewal/reinstatement, the Carrier’s safety record confirmed identification, as retrieved from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Company Snapshot website at https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx.
